Tornado Recovery At Sydney Desalination Plant

In 2015 a tornado ravaged the suburb of Kurnell, tearing the roof sheeting of the Sydney Desalination Plant and depositing it into a nearby Crown Lands parcel and sensitive Kurnell dune forest endangered ecological community.

The Soil Conservation Service were tasked with the cleanup and removal of sheet metal from the site.

Challenges included:

  • international flight path
  • endangered ecological community (Kurnell dune forest)
  • endangered species (grey headed flying fox camp)
  • limited access
  • challenging terrain
  • high erosion risk
  • heavily forested area
  • bushfire.
